Former Eastenders star Ross Kemp is to turn his hand to serious journalism in a new series of films which aim to reveal the activities destroying the endangered rainforest in South America.

The first instalment of Ross Kemp: Battle for the Amazon is to broadcast this Tuesday (April 20th) on Sky 1 as part of its Rainforest Rescue season and will see the actor investigate oil extraction and illegal logging in Ecuador and Brazil respectively.

According to the Guardian, the production is "one of the best environmental films in years" and discusses the issues of deforestation while taking into account the different groups of people involved.

"Battle for the Amazon is an important film that deserves a wide audience, but hopefully it won't be the last time Kemp reports on environmental issues," wrote James Murray, environment expert for the newspaper.

Fellow filmmaker James Cameron, who directed the globally successful Avatar, recently spoke out about the building of a controversial new dam set to be built in the Amazon rainforest.
