A soap favourite and a chorus of farmyard animals have joined Friends of the Earth in calling on the Government to get behind planet-friendly farming in a new version of the Little Shop of Horrors hit song ‘Feed Me.'
The animals star in a two-minute YouTube vid which sees them implore a singing politician - played by Richard Grieve, a former star of Neighbours, Home and Away and Emmerdale - to feed them planet-friendly home-grown food.
Feed Me star Richard Grieve explains how he got involved with the project:
"I was shocked to find out that producing meat and dairy leads to more climate changing-emissions than all the world's transport - and relieved to hear that Friends of the Earth is on the case with its Food Chain Campaign.
"This video calls on the Government to get behind planet-friendly farming which means treating animals better and giving them home-grown feed instead of importing it from areas where forests have been cleared to grow it.
"You don't have to have worked on Emmerdale to know what a hard time UK farmers are having so I'm completely behind Friends of the Earth's call for more money and support for small and planet-friendly farms."
Friends of the Earth's Food Chain Campaign was launched earlier this year. It calls on the Government to take action to reduce the impact of the meat and dairy industry and highlights some shocking facts:
• Livestock production is responsible for 18 per cent of global greenhouse gas emissions, more than all the planes, cars and lorries on the planet.
• On current trends animal feed production and cattle ranching alone and will destroy 40% of the Amazon rainforest by 2050.
Clare Oxborrow, Friends of the Earth's food campaigner, said:
"Animals can't help the meat and dairy industry's gigantic carbon hoofprint - but the Government can.
"By using public money to fund planet-wrecking factory farms, the Government is propping up an industry that is wiping out forests and making climate change worse.
"The politician in ‘Feed Me' is won over by the animals' pleas for planet-friendly feed - by contacting your MP you can help win over the Government to change the deal behind everyone's meals."
