Among the world's rainforests, the Amazon rainforest "reigns supreme", it has been said.

Writing for Forbes Traveler, Anthony Grant said that the planet's rainforests are amongst the most "richly diverse wildernesses" areas in the world and noted that while much of the rainforests are endangered due to deforestation, there is still much to explore.

Mr Grant went on to comment on the huge diversity of life which can be seen in the Amazon rainforest, including a fifth of the world's birds and some areas which can boast more than 75,000 different types of trees.

For those considering visiting a rainforest, he said that depending on which area they choose, a trip could be incorporated into a wider trip or made "the centrepiece" of a getaway.

Meanwhile, it was recently reported that the rate of Amazon deforestation has been falling over the past 12 months, apart from a spike in activity in July.

According to the country's environment minister Carlos Minc, efforts to stop deforestation have seen a 46 per cent decline in the level of such activity compared to last year.
