Authorities in the jungle Peruvian region of Loreto said they will host a special voting day in October to support the Amazon River in the selection of 28 Official Finalist Candidates competing to be one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature. “The initiative was launched by municipalities of this area that are very interested in this issue and with which they expect to maintain this coordination level in the contest,” she told Andina.
They are visiting schools and institutions of the regional government to encourage people who live in Loreto to continue voting.
“Not everybody knows that the Amazon River is a finalist and that competition is strong; we need everyone’s support so that it can become one of the New Seven Wonders of Nature,” she said.
She added that Peruvian Minister for Foreign Trade Martin Perez will also support the campaign in order to achieve this goal.
The Amazon Rainforest, also known as Amazonia, the Amazon jungle or the Amazon Basin, encompasses seven million square kilometers (1.7 billion acres), though the forest itself occupies some 5.5 million square kilometers (1.4 billion acres), located within nine nations.
The Amazon represents over half of the planet's remaining rainforests and comprises the largest and most species-rich tract of tropical rainforest in the world. The Amazon River is the largest river in the world by volume, with a total flow greater than the top ten rivers worldwide combined. It accounts for approximately one-fifth of the total world river flow and has the biggest drainage basin on the planet. Not a single bridge crosses the Amazon.
