World Land Trust and their partner, the Center for the Development of the Indigenous Amazonians recently announced that the Matsés National Reserve in Peru has been approved by the Peruvian national government. This landmark decision guarantees the protection of 1,039,390 acres of untouched Amazonian rain forest as well as the protection of the Matsés indigenous Amazon tribe.

The rain forest being protected is home to over 65 species of mammal and 416 species of bird, as well as about 3,000-4,000 plant species. Two endangered monkey species also call this pristine forest home, the Bald Uakari and the tiny Goeldi’s Marmoset. The reserve area includes an archipelago of white-sand forests that house both floral and fauna endemics and are representative of a rare habitat within the Amazon. The region has an huge variety of plants and animals, and this preservation act is a victory for conservationists all over the world.
