Reopening in May 2009 is the innovative and refurbished marine mammal habitat that is home to the stars of Shedd: the beluga whales, sea lions, dolphins, and sea otters.

The new state-of-the-art, ultra modern exhibits are interactive, making for a fun and memorable aquarium experience

What to See at Shedd Aquarium

Highlights of the Aquarium

  • The New Oceanarium Transformed and renewed, the Oceanarium has many interactive opportunities, including the new Pacific Northwest Exhibit. Beluga whales are closer than ever in the updated display.
  • Wild Reef ExhibitFeaturing over two dozen species of sharks, visitors can walk over a glass floor filled with stingrays and walk beneath a giant clear ceiling, watching marine life swim above.
  • Apo Village Another interactive display and built by the people of Apo Island. The Island is one of the world's best known community-organized marine sanctuaries. It is home to over 650 documented species of fish and estimated to have over 400 species of corals. The volcanic island is about 5 miles off the southeastern tip of Negros Island in the Philippines.
  • Amazon Rising ExhibitThe Rainforest comes to life as visitors walk through this multi-stage display. As water rises and falls in different seasons in the Rainforest, the many changes are illustrated throughout the display.
  • Waters of the World Exhibit As the name says, many water habitats can be explored in the Waters of the World. The ocean floor captures imagination with beautiful displays of moon jellies, octopus, seas stars, sea horses and many other species found in the ocean. Wetlands, rivers and the Great Lakes can all be explored through hundreds of unique and interactive exhibits.
  • Caribbean Reef Exhibit With a view from every side, this large circular display is a showpiece for the aquarium. The aquarium has informational live shows and feedings throughout the day, detailing the life of the many inhabitants, including green sea turtles, parrot fish and eels. While in the Wild Reef Exhibit, the view through the ceiling is actually the bottom of the Caribbean Reef floor.

How much Does it Cost to Go to Shedd Aquarium?

Admission to the aquarium is only $18.00 for an entire day. A good value is the yearly family membership, which is only $115.00 and entitles members to unlimited access for an entire year, as well as discounts on dining, shopping and many of the unique experiences offered at the aquarium.

How to Get to Shedd

Located on the Lake Michigan Shore, just outside downtown Chicago on the Museum Campus. Shedd Aquarium is easily accessible by individuals, group buses or public transportation. Currently, The Chicago Museum Campus is served by the CTA's buses. For local transportation, visitCTAor call 312-836-7000. There is a fee for individual and bus parking.
