An MP has led calls for less reliance on meat reared on rainforest-grown food in the UK and said that now is the time to stop "trashing the planet".

According to the Richmond and Twickenham Times, MP for Feltham and Heston Alan Keen is now backing an eco campaign aimed at encouraging farmers to bring up their animals on food which has been produced in the UK.

The source noted that he is one of more than 160 MPs giving their support to calls for animals reared in the UK to not be given animal food which is grown in areas of the rainforest cut down for the purpose.

"On current trends, animal feed production and cattle ranching alone are estimated to lead to the destruction of 40 per cent of the Amazon rainforest by 2050," reported the newspaper.

One of the nations most impacted by cattle-linked deforestation is Brazil, a country which lost 2,681,400 hectares of forest per year between 1990 and 2000, according to Monga Bay figures.
