A writer visiting the Amazon rainforest has spoken of finding the environment so warm he feared he "might never cool down".

BBC correspondent David Shukman, writing for the Guardian, detailed a rainforest trip to a lodge in the Brazilian state of Para. He stayed in the town of Alter do Chao, which he said is well known for attracting tourists to its sandy Caribbean-style beaches.

Despite the heat, Mr Shukman took a trip to a sauna which he described as being "the exact opposite of what I most needed" and like a furnace.

"But the moment I stepped outside, my view of the Amazon was utterly transformed. It felt cooler and above me was a huge shower-head fed from a deep well. The cool water hit me and it felt electrifying," he explained.

The average temperature in the Brazilian Amazon is around 26 degrees Celsius, but the high levels of humidity can make the air feel sticky and much warmer.
