Cosmetics company Avon has announced that it is to replant one million trees in the Atlantic Rainforest in South America.
The move forms part of a major initiative on the part of the firm to invest more in environmentally beneficially schemes. It will donate $1 million (£663,000) to The Nature Conservancy to launch a project called Hello Green Tomorrow, which will help to kick-start a women's environmental movement.
The scheme will begin with the replanting of rainforest trees and will also include fundraising efforts by Avon's 6.2 million global representatives.
Just seven per cent of the Atlantic Rainforest exists today. All of the replanted trees will help to support the Environment Programme Plant for the Planet: Billion Tree Campaign managed by the United Nations.
Commenting on the scheme, Fernando Veiga of The Nature Conservancy Brazil said: "The Atlantic Rainforest is a critical conservation priority.
"It is one of the greatest repositories of biodiversity on the earth, including primates, mammals, amphibians, reptiles, fish and birds."
Some of the main causes of deforestation in the Amazon include cattle ranches, small and large-scale agriculture and both legal and illegal logging, according to Mongabay.com.
