The Amazon rainforest has been held up as one of three areas important for birds in Brazil, alongside the Cerrado savannas and the Pantanal wetlands.
With parts of it now classed as IBAs - important bird areas - the Amazon rainforest features in the second volume of a publication from SAVE and Birdlife. Important Bird Areas in Brazil: Part II features 74 areas which are deemed to be important habitats for birds to live - identifies parts of the Amazon rainforest as areas which are in need of conservation protection due to the bird wildlife which can be found in them."We hope that the second volume will, as the first volume has, help public prosecutors build their argument towards the protection of key sites in areas where much future development is planned," said director and president of SAVE and co-author of the publication Dr Jaqueline Goerck.
The Amazon rainforest is richly diverse and it is thought that 50 per cent of all the world's species can be found there.
