The recent massive power cuts seen in Brazil recently could lead to more interest in the building of dams in the rainforest.
According to an article on Monga Bay, the cuts could be used by developers to push forward plans for more hydroelectric dams to be created within the Amazon rainforest.
As well as this, the article noted that as Brazil has recently been announced as the host of the 2016 Olympic Games, the cuts could be causing worries over whether the country is up to putting on such a large event.
There are a number of Amazon dams either currently under construction or in the planning stages, such as the Xingu and Madeira projects.
"While environmentalists, biologists and indigenous rights groups have opposed the projects due to social and ecological concerns, powerful development interests have lobbied hard for the dams," said the source.
It is not just the Amazon rainforest which is at the centre of rows about dams and earlier this month, around 50 protestors travelled to a demonstration against the building of a dam in Indonesia.
