Some Amazonian ranchers are beginning to realise that replanting trees they have cleared and helping to stop deforestation may be more lucrative than simply cutting down trees and selling them, it has been claimed.
Speaking to the Guardian, Amazonian rancher Luiz Castelo, 59, admitted that he does not have the desire to replant trees which have been cut down."Personally I don't like planting things. I don't see the fun," he said.
However, the newspaper noted that despite this, many who work in the rainforest may be changing their views of deforestation, even if it is from a financial perspective rather than a want to help protect endangered rainforest.
Mr Castelo runs the Bang Bang ranch in the Amazon rainforest, which is home to around 10,000 cattle.
Over the past few years, he has invested more than £125,000 in helping a number of projects to reforest 434.72 acres of land, the newspaper said.
Around 150,000 square kilometres of rainforest in Brazil were lost between May 2000 and August 2006, according to Mongabay.com.
