A 73-year-old man from Sunderland who made a visit to the endangered Amazon rainforest has spoken of the "sights and sounds" of the area.

Speaking to the Sunderland Echo, John Talbot, from Grangetown, said that the experience was "amazing".

He spoke of the number of animals he saw on the trip, including spotted rare otters - which he saw in the Pantanal tropical wetlands - and Capuchin monkeys.

"It's so sad to think that at some point in the future the only way you will be able to see them is in a zoo," Mr Talbot noted.

He went on to say that the Amazon rainforest is being "burned at such a rate" that soon, some of the animals will not have anywhere to live.

According to figures on Monga Bay, between May 2000 and August 2005, more than 132,000 kilometres of rainforest were cleared in the country, through logging and cattle ranching.
