Brazil Delegation to Explain How Rainforest Protection Combats Climate Change,
Sustains Natives' Livelihoods
Copenhagen Negotiation Participants to Discuss opportunities for Reducing
Emissions fromDeforestation and Degradation (REDD) projects in Amazon
What: A distinguished delegation of Brazilian grassroots leaders who are
central players in the vital struggle to protect the Amazon rainforest and
empower indigenous communities to be a core part of the solution to fight
climate change will be on a panel, "Perspectives from the Amazon: Forests,
Climate Change and Community Benefits." The Brazilian delegation will share
perspectives on how policies for Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and
Degradation (REDD) can contribute to sustaining forests and livelihoods for
forest-dependent people, and how these efforts play a vital role in state,
national and international efforts to fight global warming. The panel is
being hosted by Environmental Defense Fund and UCLA's Center for Climate
Change Solutions.
Why: Deforestation accounts for 15-20 percent of global greenhouse gas
emissions. Forest preservation is vital to fighting climate change and the
Brazilian federal and state governments are partnering with California, the
United States and other countries to develop strategies for meeting national
and global emissions reductions goals through Reduced Emissions from
Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) policies.
