Amazon rainforest project 'could seriously impact region

The Belo Monte Hydroelectric Project could have serious environmental consequences for the endangered Amazon rainforest, it has been claimed.

According to an independent review from 40 experts from Brazilian research institutions, the dam - which is being built on the Xingu River - could have a negative impact on the area's eco-systems and residents.

The building of the dam would see over 80 per cent of the river's flow diverted, which the report said could lead to the death of millions of fish and potential extinction of a number of species.

Official statistics put the number of people set to be affected by the dam at 19,000 - but those behind the report put this figure at more than double this.

"According to private investors, the project could cost up to US$19 billion, making it an extremely inefficient investment given that the dam will generate only a fraction of its installed capacity during the dry season," said Francisco Hernandez, who sat on the panel and is an electrical engineer.

He went on to say that as well as the financial cost, the social costs and rainforest "devastation" from the project would be substantial.
