Problems between natives, environmentalists and rainforest industry leaders in the Amazon stems from differences in opinion over how the area should be used, it has been noted.
Writing for Grist magazine, Brenda Baletti said that the Amazon rainforest is "one of the globe's most important climate stabilising resources" but conceded the many issues over its use and purpose which are ongoing. She noted that while some see the Amazon rainforest as somewhere to call home - and a place which is home to a rich variety of wildlife and plants - many others simply see the region as a source of low-cost food for exporting and a place to raise cattle for the global beef market.
According to the article, many native and indigenous people living in Brazil protested over the use of the rainforest to coincide with the climate change conference, which was held in Denmark in December.
"Just as the Copenhagen effort ended in a frustrating stalemate, the success of this uprising remains very much in doubt. But the drama in Brazil is even more intense - blazes are being set and shots being fired," it said.
