Rainforest communities have been given support by energy and climate change secretary Ed Miliband, who has pledged to help halt deforestation.
The Labour politician took a boat trip on the Xingu river near the remote indigenous community of Pavuru in the Amazon rainforest and told locals in a public address that the forestry sector is having a severe impact on climate change, reports the Guardian.
He said: "There is no solution to the question of climate change without forestry.
"We can only get an agreement on climate change if it involves Brazil and it involves forestry."
Miliband spent five days in the area meeting environmentalists, policy makers and researchers at the frontline of Brazil's battle against rainforest deforestation and climate change.
Meanwhile, major manufacturers of watches Adidas and Timberland signed a Greenpeace deal this week to not use Brazilian leather produced unethically.
Both companies will not buy leather involved in a production process which could endanger the future of the Amazon rainforest under the terms of the deal.
