The famed campaigner to protect the Amazon rainforest, Marina Silva, has resigned from the ruling Workers' Party, paving the way for a possible presidential run in the 2010 election.

According to the Guardian, Marina Silva wants to put the environment back on the agenda. In her resignation letter to the President of the Workers' Party, she wrote that her decision expressed a wish to break with the idea of "development based on material growth at any cost, with huge gains for a few and perverse results for the majority" including "the destruction of natural resources".

According to the BBC, Marina Silva has confirmed that she is likely to join Brazil's Green Party and is considering running for presidency, but that she has not decided yet.

The former Environmental Minister left the government in May 2008, due to difficulties in pursuing an environmental agenda.
