Tynemouth, UK - Tynemouth’s Blue Reef Aquarium is celebrating the Easter holidays with a series of monkey-themed events and activities. The award-winning North Tyneside attraction is home to a colony of miniature New World monkeys including marmosets and tamarins as part of their Amazing Amazon feature.
In addition to three daily monkey feeds and question and answer sessions, visitors will be able to complete fun monkey quiz sheets, colour in their own monkey pictures and even sample monkey-themed food in the café.
There will be a monkey fact trail around Amazing Amazon along with information from WWF, the Woodland Trust and Rainforect Concern about ways to help protect the world’s rainforests.
Blue Reef’s Anna Etchells said: “Since we opened Amazing Amazon it has become one of our most popular features. This event will allow visitors to find out more about our resident colonies in a fun and entertaining way.”
Amazing Amazon is a spectacular new display based on the tropical rainforests.
The feature includes a selection of freshwater rainforest fish species alongside realistic planting and a waterfall and is home to a colony of rescued monkeys including common and pygmy marmosets and cotton top tamarins.
A number of the monkeys have been rescued after being found living in unsuitable conditions while others have been made homeless after their owners could no longer look after them.
At Blue Reef their spacious, naturally-themed enclosures provide them with plenty to keep them busy including rope swings, climbing frames and an ever-changing programme of environmental enrichment features.
As well as Amazing Amazon, Blue Reef is also home to the spectacular outdoor Seal Cove display, a family of Asian short claw otters, and hundreds of tropical and native marine and freshwater species including tropical sharks and rays, poison arrow frogs, seahorses and pufferfish.
